Gabriela de Matos
São Paulo-based architect Gabriela de Matos is the founder of Rio de Janeiro-based architecture practice Gabriela de Matos.
De Matos' work investigates structural racism and its implications in urban planning and architecture produced in the African diaspora in Brazil. She proposes actions that can promote the debate on gender and ethnicity in architecture.
Alongside her practice, she leads the Black Architects Project that identifies and catalogues black Brazilian female architects and is the author of Black Architects vol.1, which won the Brazilian institute of Architects Sao Paulo (IAB-sp) award for Best Architecture Publication.
De Matos curated the Brazilian pavilion at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale alongside architect Paulo Tavares. Their pavilion Terra won the Golden Lion award for Best National Participation. She was also awarded Architect of the Year 2020 by IAB Rio de Janeiro.
Formerly co-president of IAB-sp, she is now a professor of architecture and urbanism at Sao-Paulo architecture school Escola da Cidade.
