Dezeen Awards 2019 judge Jing Liu

Architect Jing Liu is co-founder of Brooklyn-based architecture SO-IL.

Jing Liu established SO-IL with Florian Idenburg in 2008, after working together at SANAA in Japan. Using architecture and interdisciplinary research, the duo have recently explored air filtration using mesh fabric, from a fog-filtering housing prototype to structural mesh costumes worn by musicians during the Chicago Architecture Biennale.

The practice's cultural projects include enveloping a gallery in a hand-joined veil of chain mail and a 450 metre-long snaking white tent to house the first Frieze Art Fair. In 2017, the studio's collaboration with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson on the Manetti Shrem Museum was awarded by the Architect's Newspaper, Fast Company and AIA San Francisco.

Liu is an active board member of the Van Alen Institute, a nonprofit organisation that comes up with design solutions for current cultural and social challenges. The architect is frequently invited to lecture at academic institutions around the world and has been a faculty member at Columbia University's GSAPP since 2009.
