PHDD Arquitectos mixes old and new for renovated Portuguese yarn store
Lisbon studio PHDD Arquitectos has blended contemporary and classic elements for the interiors of a craft store in Cascais, Portugal.
The 75-square-metre Craft Company shop is spread across two levels, with bespoke wooden cabinets and drawers on the first floor housing a rainbow-coloured collection of wool and thread.

Further products are shown in traditional display cases, and a manual cash register is on hand to ring up purchases.

"The yarn store invites us to a journey in time, the meeting between the modern and the classic," said the studio. "That was the customer's goal and was the principle for the development of the project."

Window displays are lit by bare bulb pendants, and the colours of the yarn are emphasised by white-painted walls and grey flooring.

Chalkboards have handwritten details of classes, and vintage sewing machines are stacked on top of one another as part of a ceiling-high display.

The basement of the building houses a warehouse and hosts workshops. Its all-white interiors contrast the "warm and cosy" atmosphere of the first floor.
White shelving provides a place to store stock, while a wooden workbench – lit by four white pendants – offers room for people to attend classes. High ceilings help create a sense of space, while the white walls help reflect the limited amount of natural light.

Portuguese firm Aurora Arquitectos also paired old and new in its renovation of a Lisbon apartment, which retained original features such as tiles and wooden floors alongside contemporary additions.
Other recently completed shop interiors include a Bangkok shoe store designed to look like a bank vault, and an old London post office converted into a bakery.
